An egg donor is a female who allows a doctor to harvest her eggs, allowing them to be used by a woman who cannot produce her own eggs. The process requires hormone injections and an operation.

Considerations

The egg donor process requires a physical, medical tests, a psychological screening, sexually transmitted disease tests, daily hormone injections, estrogen patches and an invasive surgery to remove the eggs.

Benefits

Harvesting eggs provides a child for a family that is unable to conceive children, and egg donors are generally paid lucratively.

Time Frame

It takes four to six weeks to complete the process of becoming an egg donor.

Expert Insight

According to the American Pregnancy Association, "as high as 48 percent of women using donor eggs will experience pregnancy."

Warning

Eggs provided by donation have a small chance of experiencing birth defects, similar to a regular pregnancy.
