Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a developmental condition that can cause hyperactivity, inability to control impulses and difficulties with mental focus, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Although symptoms are most prevalent in children and adolescents, they can continue into adulthood. There is no known cure for ADHD; however, certain vitamins may help you control the symptoms of this disorder. Consult your physician before increasing your vitamin intake to address ADHD symptoms.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant vitamin that may help prevent free radical damage to brain cells. This may aid in the maintenance of healthy brain cells, which may reduce focus and emotional problems associated with ADHD. It's also an immune system enhancer, which may help prevent brain cell damage caused by viruses, bacteria and fungal infections. Vitamin C stimulates the production of serotonin in your brain, relieving stress and improving cognitive function, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." You can get vitamin C from foods such as strawberries, kiwifruit, sweet peppers. broccoli, dandelion greens and citrus fruits.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is an essential vitamin for treating ADHD symptoms, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. This vitamin is necessary for the production and utilization of neurotransmitter chemicals, including norepinepherine, dopamine and serotonin, which help regulate mood and brain function. Adults with ADHD typically have low levels of these neurotransmitter chemicals. Vitamin B6 also stimulates your immune system. Increase your intake of vitamin B6 buonsuming foods such as fish, peas, beef, avocados, bananas, lentils, potatoes, carrots and eggs.

Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3, or niacin, is a circulatory system enhancer, according to the Balches. It may increase your body's ability to supply your brain with vitamin C, zinc, calcium and magnesium, which support proper brain function. This may help reduce the severity of behavioral problems, loss of cognitive function and hyperactivity that commonly accompany ADHD. This vitamin also calms your nervous system, so it may curb restlessness and irritability. Vitamin B3 is available from food sources such as broccoli, carrots, beef liver, peanuts, tomatoes and whole grains.
