Lactobacillusacidophilus, or acidophilus, is a healthy form of bacteria used to replenish intestinal bacteria in conditions such as Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel condition that causes intestinal swelling, frequent diarrhea and pain. This condition is often associated with irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis because of the array of symptom similarity. The immune system is abnormal in this condition and bacteria or food is often mistaken as a foreign invader, which causes the immune system to attack the substances, resulting in the painful symptoms. Acidophilus is used as a supplement for treating the intestinal disturbance and is only advised after consultation with your physician to determine safety. Acidophilus supplements are not meant to replace medical treatment of Crohn's disease.
Step 1
Take units for preventing diarrhea. Frequent bouts of diarrhea are common in Crohn's disease. Use L. acidophilus supplements to prevent recurrent diarrhea. The University of Maryland Medical Center indicates a starting dose of 1 to 2 billion colony-forming units, per day. Higher doses, up to 15 billion cells per day, are an option under physician supervision.
Step 2
Eat dairy enhanced with acidophilus. Many dairy food products such as yogurt or milk are enhanced with probiotics in the form of L. acidophilus. Find foods containing this substance and eat at least 8 oz. of yogurt or food enhanced with acidophilus a day to prevent bowel disturbance. Consult your physician for the exact dose needed from enhanced food sources.
Step 3
Start a daily maintenance treatment. Supplements containing freeze-dried acidophilus in combination with bifidobacteria taken on a daily basis can reduce inflammation caused by Crohn's disease. MedlinePlus notes the average dose for maintenance treatment is 3 g, twice daily. Consult your physician before using maintenance supplements to ensure safety.
Step 4
Take high dose capsules short term to treat bowel upset. High doses of acidophilus taken six weeks or less, twice daily, can treat the irritable bowels associated with Crohn's. Determine exact dosing with your physician based on specific symptom presentation.
Tips and Warnings
- Gas and bloating can occur from taking acidophilus.
- Do not use dairy foods if you have a problem with lactose intolerance. Stop taking acidophilus if recurrent diarrhea symptoms persist.
