How to Lose Weight on a Juice Fast

Some individuals hope to drop pounds fast, and hope that juice fasting is the answer to getting rid of the weight. Juice fast enthusiasts claim that fasting with only juices to drink is an effective way to clean and detoxify your body. While there are no scientific findings to back up these claims, drinking juice is a helpful way to gain nutrients through a low calorie means, which can result in rapid weight loss. While a juice fast is never a long term solution, you may find that you have success with it on a short term basis.

Step 1

Purchase a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables from the grocery store or farmers market. Look for fruits and vegetables that have bright colors, signifying a greater concentration of vitamins and minerals. Think also about the water content of each fruit or vegetable; some lend themselves to juicing better than other. Apples, oranges, watermelon, carrots, celery, spinach and tomato are all good for juicing.

Step 2

Obtain a juicing machine. A juicing machine is much different than a blender or mixer. If you attempt the fast with a blender or mixer, you aren't going to keep the caloric intake as low as a juice fast needs to be, as all of the fiber will stay in the juice. A juicer separates the juice from the fiber, resulting in a thinner, smoother drink.

Step 3

Only drink a glass of juice for each meal. You can change the types of juices that you use, such as a fruit-based juice in the morning, a combination in the afternoon and a vegetable-based juice at night. Step 4

Continue to use the juice fast for three, seven or even thirty days. Fasting expert Tom Coghill recommends that you start small and work your way up to a longer fast. According to his own experiences, the first fast is the shortest and the hardest, as it is a large adjustment to your body. As you become more used to juice fasting, you can extend your fast as needed.

Step 5

Come off of the juice fast slowly. Your body will have been digesting something very easy for the length of your fast, so don't overwhelm it with eating sugary, white flower or animal product foods right away. Start with solid fruits and vegetables, then add in whole wheat, and, finally, lean protein sources.

Step 6

Complete the juice fast any time you feel like you need a boost in your weight loss. Although it is not a quick fix, it can help jump start a healthier lifestyle leading to weight loss.
