Fish oil is a dietary source of healthy, unsaturated fats known as omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids have many health benefits, including lowering your risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. While fatty fish such as salmon and tuna are the ideal sources of omega-3 acids, if you don't eat enough fish to obtain enough fish oil via food, fish oil supplements are beneficial.

Step 1

Look for the word "pure" or "purified" on your fish oil supplement bottle. This will indicate that your supplement is a pure form of fish oil and free of possible contaminants.

Step 2

Check the ingredients list to make sure your fish oil supplement does not contain oils from king mackerel, farm-raised salmon or shark. These fish often contain mercury or other toxins in their flesh and organs, making them unsafe. However, Most fish oil supplements do not contain these types of fish meat.

Step 3

Buy your fish oil supplement at a reputable health-food store or from a well-established online supplement vendor, and look for well-known brand names. Your physician or pharmacist can recommend quality brands of pure fish oil for your use.
