A ingrown toenail is a relatively common occurrence that is characterized by part of your toenail growing into the skin of that same toe. Ingrown toenails often become red, swollen and painful and are prone to infection. You can usually treat an ingrown toenail yourself and soothe the pain and inflammation, but if the pain becomes serious or if you have diabetes or any other condition that can affect foot circulation, contact your doctor.

Step 1

Soak your feet in a tub or basin filled with warm water. Let them soak for 15 to 20 minutes three times per day to help reduce swelling.

Step 2

Slide small pieces of cotton under the ingrown part of your toenail after you have soaked it. Leave it in there to give the nail a chance to grow away from your skin. Change the cotton daily.

Step 3

Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment to the area to help avoid infection. Wrap it with a bandage after to keep it clean.

Step 4

Change your footwear to a style that features an open toe if weather permits. Sandals or other open-toed shoes will prevent the toe from rubbing against the inside of your shoe.
