Fibromyalgia is characterized by pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as bouts of fatigue and sleep disturbance. This condition is more prominent in women and the risk for developing fibromyalgia increases with age. The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, however, symptoms are linked to past emotional or physical trauma. Medical treatment aims to manage the symptoms utilizing medications to decrease pain and depression, as well as physical therapy and mental health counseling. Herbal healing as a supplement to medical treatment can also offer help in providing immune system support, reducing pain and inflammation.

Step 1

Drink green tea daily. Green tea is made from fresh leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and is useful for increasing antioxidants in your body. Antioxidants promote immune system health to prevent symptom flare up in fibromyalgia. Drink 12 oz. of green tea either cold or hot or take a standardized extract capsule daily, containing 250 to 500 mg.

Step 2

Apply a capsaicin topical to your skin. Capsaicin is a derivative of cayenne pepper and is used to relieve the minor muscle pains and inflammation associated with fibromyalgia. Topical cream is available over-the-counter or by prescription. Use cream with .025 percent capsaicin on the tender skin area, once to three times a day. Consult your physician about dosing and use of capsaicin before beginning treatment.

Step 3

Take valerian to improve sleep disturbance. Valerian root is useful for inducing tranquility, muscle relaxation and sleep. Use a capsule supplement or prepare a tea or tincture with valerian. The Office of Dietary Supplements notes that high doses of valerian, at 900 mg tend to induce sleep more readily. However, consult your physician before taking this herb to ensure safety.

Step 4

Stop muscle spasms with calendula. Calendula is used for decreasing tension and spasms in the muscles. This herb is also helpful in reducing inflammation and pain on the skin. MedlinePlus notes that dose specificity is not available for this herb, and to follow package labeling recommendations. Consult your physician before using calendula to ensure safety.

Step 5

Use dandelion to reduce pain intensity. Dandelion is an edible green or the leaves and roots can be made into a tea. Take 1 tbsp. of juiced dandelion or steep leaves into 1 cup of hot water, twice daily to manage pain and strengthen your connective tissues.

Tips and Warnings

  • Consult your physician before using any herbs to treat fibromyalgia. Consider other alternative treatments such as yoga and acupuncture in addition to herbal and traditional medical treatments.
  • Do not use capsaicin topical cream on open wounds or irritated skin. Don not take valerian if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you are taking sedative type prescription medications. Do not use dandelion if you have gallbladder problems.
