Losing weight can change your life in more ways than you might think. You will improve your health and lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases. What you might not realize, though, is that you can gain energy by losing weight. The steps you take to effectively lose weight can help you to feel more energized and less fatigued. Eating smart and moving more can make you eager and ready to go.
Step 1
Exercise at least five days each week. If you can, exercise daily. Being more active will provide you with added energy as your body benefits from an increase in the flow of nutrient rich blood and oxygen. Exercise improves the function of the heart and lungs, providing you with more energy to do the things you love.
Step 2
Add healthy high-energy foods to your diet (see Resources below). By eating healthier foods when you need energy, you can easily start to lose weight. Avoid relying on sweets and caffeine to provide you with quick energy. Healthy alternatives when you need a boost include leafy green vegetables, oranges, strawberries, grapes, bananas, beans, fruit juice and nuts.
Step 3
Implement a nutrient rich diet into your lifestyle to help you drop pounds and fight fatigue. If you don't eat a healthy diet you lack essential nutrients and can easily become overweight and drained of energy. Consume a mixture of foods that will provide your body with folic acid, iron, potassium, and vitamins A, B12 and C. A nutrient rich diet should include an assortment of fruits and vegetables, fish and lean meat sources of protein.
Step 4
Plan to eat four to six small meals throughout the day to maintain an active metabolism. Your body will be able to digest the meals you eat more effectively, thereby aiding you in your efforts to lose weight. By eating several small meals each day, you are less likely to be tempted by cravings for unhealthy foods. You are also providing your body with a more steady supply of fuel for energy.
Step 5
Drink several glasses of water throughout the day even if you do not feel thirsty. Drinking more water can help to energize you and drop those extra pounds. If you drink adequate amounts of water throughout the day, you are less likely to overeat. Sometimes when you think you want food, your body may just need a drink. According to Samantha Heller, clinical nutritionist and contributing editor to "Health" magazine, it is not all that uncommon for people to confuse thirst with hunger.
Step 6
Remember the importance of getting plenty of restful sleep. You are more likely to overeat during the day if you are not sleeping enough during the night. Getting more sleep can help you from feeling gloomy and sluggish throughout the day. Since low mood can be a trigger for overeating, sleep more so that you eat less and feel more energetic.
