A variety of foods that have a low glycemic index are typically eaten with milk. These are particularly breakfast foods. When you eat foods that minimally raise your blood sugar levels, you can best prevent or manage type 2 diabetes. Most people with type 2 diabetes also suffer from obesity. Certain foods are a nutritious source of fiber and may assist weight loss.
Whole-Grain, Low-Sugar Cereals
Whole grains contain insoluble fiber. Iowa State University states that foods that are high in fiber assist those who are trying to lose weight, because they satisfy cravings. You can eat whole-grain cereals that provide you with fiber, yet contain little or no sugar. According to the Dr. Oz Show, avoid artificial sweeteners because they can give you more cravings and may cause cancer.
Oatmeal
Make a hot oatmeal breakfast and use milk while you are cooking it. Add a pinch of cinnamon, clove, ginger and nutmeg to it. Sprinkle about ¼ tsp on top and stir it in. Taste it and if it needs to be sweetened, add more stevia until it is sweet enough. Stevia is sweeter than table sugar. Instead of using those spices, you may add berries for additional antioxidants.
Sprouted Sandwich
If you prefer more of a solid meal, make a toasted sandwich using sprouted bread. Sprouted bread is high in protein and fiber, has low or no sugar and does not contain unrefined carbohydrates. Spread your favorite natural nut butter on the bread. Sprinkle cinnamon onto the nut butter. Smear organic agave syrup or stevia onto the toast. Make an unsweetened jam by mashing your favorite berries in a container and putting it in a pan. Slowly cook it at a low setting and spread it onto the toast. Eat the toast with milk for a new diabetic-friendly version of the traditional PB&J.
Unsweetened Granola
You can find unsweetened granola in the bulk section of some health food stores. If you prefer, you can make your own sugarless granola. Take oatmeal and spread it onto a cookie sheet so that it makes a covers it in a thin layer. This helps determine how much to use. Place all the oatmeal into a bowl and mix in the spices mentioned above and agave syrup to taste. Agave syrup does not raise blood sugar levels.
