Kickboxing has become one of the most popular forms of gaining cardiovascular fitness. It is also a martial art that is used to teach self-defense and compete in mixed martial arts fights and tournaments. To become a kickboxing instructor, you must reach a high level of expertise to gain certification. Once you reach that level, you will be able to teach kickboxing in fighting gyms, fitness studios or you may choose to open your own facility.

Function

To become a kickboxing instructor who specializes in training martial arts competitors, you need to have studied the sport for many years and participation in sanctioned bouts will give you credibility. It is one thing to master the art of throwing punches and kicks, and to teach the individuals you are training how to do the same, but when you have been in the ring and have gone up against fighters trying to knock you out with kicks and punches, your words have more meaning. Get as much experience in the ring as possible before you try to teach others how to fight against tough competitors.

Types

Aside from kickboxing training for fighters, many kickboxing instructors specialize in fitness training. Kickboxing instructors teach group classes, work as personal trainers, teach cardio kick boxing and lead combat classes. Each one of these classes last 50 minutes to an hour and demand outstanding conditioning.

Considerations

Take a kickboxing instructor course offered by the American Fitness Professionals and Associates so you are qualified to teach kickboxing classes. To become a certified instructor, you must pass a written exam that can be taken at home and also pass a practical course demonstrating that you have full knowledge of all the moves that you will be teaching. You will be able to take the written test at home, but you must demonstrate your practical kickboxing ability in person.

Cost

The cost of taking a kickboxing certification course begins at $175, as of 2010. You also have to pay to take the certification exam and that costs $50. If you are going to take a retest after failing the written or practical test, you have to pay an additional $50.

Features

When you become a kickboxing instructor, you will most likely teach a wide array of students. You will get some who are interested in becoming mixed martial arts competitors and others who are looking to improve conditioning but have no interest in exchanging punches and kicks in the middle of the ring. Make sure you have the communication skills to handle all students. You will need to be more aggressive and demanding with kickboxers who want to fight and you will need to be more patient with those who want to learn the right form. Group your classes according to the needs of the students to get the best results and build a strong teaching reputation.
