Dark liquors -- whiskey, dark rum and tequila -- get their color from the casks they are aged in and from flavor additives like acetone, tannins and furfural. The agents that impart color may be the same ones responsible for the stronger hangover symptoms than those created by clear liquor, according to the Wired Science website. All 80-proof dark liquors contain 69 calories per ounce.

Tequila

A 750-mL bottle of 80-proof tequila is 1,649 calories. Upgrade to 100 proof and the calories also upgrade to 2,108. Shake this liquor into a tequila gimlet, a mix of lemon juice, tequila and sweetened lime juice for 147 calories.

Dark Rum

A pint of 80-proof dark rum contains 825 calories. Mix your dark rum in a Painkiller cocktail with cream of coconut, pineapple juice and orange juice and you will get a considerably higher calorie count of 254 calories.

Whiskey

A 1-jigger shot of 80-proof whiskey, whether you order rye, scotch, bourbon or any of the other type of whiskey, is 105 calories. Drink your whiskey in an Irish "car bomb" cocktail -- a mix of stout, Irish cream and Irish whiskey -- and you will put away 234 calories.
