Miniature golf is a game played on a small, 18-hole putting course. It is an especially appropriate game for families because it requires little skill to putt the ball. Children especially appreciate the theme-designed nature of mini golf and clever designs of each hole. For example, a pirate-themed course might feature pirate ships, treasure chests or animatronic characters around or through which you putt the ball.

Although Errol, New Hampshire, is in the northern corner of the state, and the majority of mini golf courses in the state are located three or more hours south, mini golf can be played within a 90-minute drive. The closest course, Moose Meadow Mini Golf, is 53 minutes from Errol in Gorham, New Hampshire. The next closest is Twin Mountain Fun Towne, one hour and 20 minutes from Errol, in Twin Mountain. At a distance of one hour and 30 minutes, mini golf is available at Pirate's Cove in Lincoln and at White Mountain Family Golf in Intervale.
Themes
Themes are a big part of the mini-golf experience, and each course has its own style. Near Errol, Pirate's Cove in Lincoln, New Hampshire, is the most elaborately themed, allowing players to imagine themselves in the shoes of a legendary, local hobo. The lavish course winds through waterfalls and streams and is designed for all ages and skill levels. Moose Meadow includes an arcade and batting cages, and Twin Mountain Fun Towne offers a variety of activities besides mini golf, including an arcade, driving range and prize games such as skeeball.
Hours
New Hampshire winters are cold, so mini-golf courses there typically close sometime in October and re-open in the spring. Fun Towne is open weekends in spring and fall, and daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. mid-June through Labor Day. Moose Meadow is open 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. Pirate's Cove is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. May through October.
Costs
Costs vary from course to course, but miniature golf is typically quite affordable at less than $10 per person. White Mountain and Moose Meadow do not publish pricing information, but Fun Towne promises free admission to the complex and a pay-as-you go pricing structure. It also offers a coupon for a free round of mini golf on its website. Pirate's Cove charges $8.50 for adults and $7.50 for children per 18-hole game, as of 2010.
Considerations
Mini golf is an outdoor activity, so be sure to keep weather in mind when planning an outing--appropriate outerwear during the cooler months, and sunscreen and water during the summer, are a must. Mini golf is ideal for large groups, and both Pirate's Cove and Moose Meadow can accommodate birthday parties. Pricing and hours of operation are subject to change, so call ahead for current information before heading out.
