What Are the Bad Things About Slim Fast?

The Slim-Fast diet program is a 1,200-calorie diet for weight loss. The diet is a 3-2-1 program, in which you have three 100-calorie Snack Bars or 100-calorie servings of nutritious foods, two Meal Bars or Shakes to replace two of your regular meals, and one 500-calorie balanced meal that has vegetables, starch and protein. Before you start a diet, inform yourself about its disadvantages so that you can make a better decision.

Temptation To Quit

A benefit to the Slim-Fast diet is that you do not need to purchase and prepare much food. Aside from Slim-Fast products, all you need to get from the grocery store is the food for your balanced meal and any snacks for which you choose to have food rather than Slim-Fast Snack Bars. However, the diet can be difficult to follow if you have trouble finding Slim-Fast products where you regularly shop, or if your store does not carry your favorite choices. Once you find a reliable source for Slim-Fast products, remember to plan ahead so that you always have them available when you need them, such as at work in the middle of the day. Another challenge in sticking to the diet is that it may get boring. A good portion of your calories comes from processed bars and shakes, and they come in limited flavors. Only one Snack Bar does not contain chocolate.

Hunger

The Slim-Fast diet program works by reducing your calories. Slim-Fast states that the design of its 3-2-1 plan reduces your hunger because you get to eat six times each day. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that when you are cutting your calories to lose weight, choose foods that are low in energy density, which means they low in calories but the portions are big. On the Slim-Fast program, you only get to eat one full meal from fresh foods, and the other five eating occasions are Snack Bars or 100-calorie portions of healthy foods, and Meal Bars or Shakes. You may still feel hungry while on the diet because you do not get to eat very much food. For example, if you choose to have three 24 g Snack Bars and two Shakes per day, you will be eating less than 2 oz. of solid food in addition to your single meal.

Temporary Weight Loss

The Slim-Fast diet program is easy to understand because you do not need to make many food choices or count carbohydrates or other nutrients. The simple instructions can help you succeed while you are actually on the Slim-Fast program, but once you hit your goal weight and go off the program, you risk regaining the weight. The diet relies on bars and shakes, and does not teach you how to eat a nutritious diet based on a variety of healthy foods. While you are losing weight, develop new habits that you can follow for life to maintain your weight loss. However, after the Slim-Fast diet, you may lapse back into your old habits that caused you to gain weight before.
