The Side Effects of Omega-3

Omega-3, also sometimes called "fish oil," is a type of essential fatty acid your body requires to function normally. Supplements that contain omega-3 fatty acids may be beneficial in the prevention of heart disease. Health professionals with the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) advise that adults should not consume more than 3 g of omega-3 fatty acids each day, unless otherwise recommended by a medical professional. Talk with your doctor about the side effects of omega-3 fatty acids before you begin taking this type of supplement.

Gas, Belching or Bad Breath

Treatment with omega-3 fatty acid supplements may result in the accumulation of gas inside your intestinal tract. Excess stomach gas may lead to frequent flatulence or belching, which may be embarrassing to certain people. You may also notice that your breath emits a strong or unpleasant fish-like odor as a side effect of this type of supplement. Consult your primary medical provider if you find these side effects bothersome.

Stomach Discomfort

Stomach irritation caused by omega-3 fatty acid supplements may lead to stomach discomfort. You may feel nauseous or may experience frequent episodes of heartburn. Digestive tract irritation may also result in diarrhea, a side effect characterized by urgent, loose bowel movements. Seek care from your doctor if you develop chronic diarrhea, as you may be at an increased risk of becoming dehydrated.

Bruising or Bleeding

Taking omega-3 fatty acid supplements may elevate your risks of bleeding or bruising. If you have a bleeding disorder, bruise easily or take blood-thinners, such as warfarin, talk with your physician before beginning omega-3 fatty acid therapy, UMMC warns. Additionally, seek prompt care from a doctor if you develop unusual bruises, recurrent nose bleeds or wounds that do not heal properly.

Allergic Reaction

If you are hypersensitive to food products that contain seafood, you may also be allergic to omega-3 fatty acid supplements. Improper use of these supplements by hypersensitive people may cause a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include upset stomach, facial swelling, breathing difficulties, pale skin, hives, dizziness or loss of consciousness. If you exhibit any of these symptoms after taking a dose of an omega-3 fatty acid supplement, seek immediate medical attention. Anaphylaxis may be life-threatening in the absence of prompt medical intervention.
