According to the MedlinePlus website, a preemie infant is delivered before the 37th week of pregnancy. Approximately 8 to 10 percent of babies in the United States are born premature. Feeding is one of the many challenges parents face with a premature baby.
Calories
Many premature babies must first develop their suck-swallow-breathe sequence before they are ready to bottle feed. Most premature babies will require 100 to 120 calories per kg of weight each day; some will require 160 to 180 calories per kg. As a feeding option, breast milk is preferred over bottled milk as it aids in the reduction of infections and sudden infant death syndrome, otherwise known as SIDS.
Theories
According to MedlinePlus, your baby is consuming enough food if a nappy change is required six to eight times a day. Your baby should gain approximately ¼ oz. each day for every pound of weight. Weight gain for premature babies is often unpredictable, but premature babies often require additional food supplements.
Warning
You will need to seek the help of a lactation or feeding therapist if your baby finds it difficult to latch or suck the breast or bottle. Also pay attention to other issues such as frequent vomiting or blood in the stools.
