Colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer diagnosed and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in U.S. adults, according the American Cancer Society. Individuals at risk for developing colon cancer are usually older than 50 and have a genetic history of the disease. However, diet can play a part in the development of the disease. Alternative medicine practitioners claim that fasting helps remove cancer-forming toxins and improves your overall colon health.
Diet
A poor diet of high fat and processed foods can cause an accumulation of waste in the colon. Consuming low amounts of fruits and vegetables and other fiber sources can negatively affect colon health. Studies have shown a diet high in animal fat and low in calcium, folate and fiber may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, according to the Colon Cancer Alliance.
Benefits
When fasting, decades of accumulated metabolic wastes and poisons are eliminated from the digestive track, according to Healing Daily. The group suggests fasting with fruit and vegetable juices to supply energy, minerals, vitamins, live enzymes and other nutrients necessary to improve health during the fast. Including fruits and vegetables in your fast provides calories that are easily digested and helps release toxins from fat cells.
Considerations
Deciding to do a cleanse should be a gradual process over the course of several weeks or months. However, your fasting should not last more than three days without medical supervision. The Healing Daily website suggests fasting with fruits and vegetables to obtain your minimal fuel requirement. When you don't consume enough calories your body breaks down protein in your muscles for energy.
Is It Necessary?
Doctors prescribe fasting as preparation for medical procedures such as colonoscopy but generally do not recommend it for detoxification, according to Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Michael Picco. The digestive system and bowel naturally eliminate waste material and bacteria from your body without special diets, pills or enemas. Drinking plenty of water, consuming a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and getting plenty of exercise will improve colon function.
Warning
Fasting can cause serious medical problems, such as dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, and increase your risk for infection. Individuals who have diabetes or heart or kidney conditions should avoid fasting, as should women who are pregnant or nursing. Always check with your doctor before beginning any fasting program.
