An estimated 70 percent of your total daily calorie intake is used to support your body's functions, according to the online fitness site ShapeFit. The remainder depends upon your daily activity level, sex, weight and other factors.
Effects
Because they tend to have less muscle and height than men, women burn fewer average calories per day. Women burn between 2,000 and 2,100 calories on average per day while men burn between 2,700 and 2,900, according to ShapeFit.
Calculation
To calculate an estimate of your daily calories burned, learn your basal metabolic rate. The formula for women is 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years). The formula for men is 66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years). Calculating this formula gives you an idea of your unique calorie needs.
Considerations
The daily average calories burned indicates the amount of calories you can take in to maintain your weight. If you wish to lose weight, consume fewer calories. Eat more calories if you wish to gain weight. Increasing exercise activity also helps to burn calories.
