The topic of weight can be a sensitive issue. Watching someone you care for continue to gain weight can leave you in an uncomfortable position. On the one hand, you want to bring the situation to her attention, but on the other hand, the last thing you would want to do is jeopardize your friendship. The wisest strategy is to get your message across without hurt feelings.

Step 1

Choose a moment where both you and the other person are relaxed and you have no distractions.

Step 2

Ask open-ended questions about his day, life or weight related topic and listen to the answers carefully.

Step 3

Use parts of her sentences in your reply to show that you are truly listening to what she has to say.

Step 4

Speak of his health and well-being when discussing his weight situation. Show that you care and never judge or threaten with your comments.

Step 5

Legitimize any hurt feelings or defensiveness she may feel after hearing what you have to say. Tell her you can see you have upset her, but that you care about her health and want her to be around a long time.

Step 6

Offer support and let it be known you are available for anything he may need. Don't try to force him into your way of thinking.
