How to Lose Weight Before the Summer

It is not a good idea to try to lose a lot of weight in the last few weeks leading up to summer. You should start an effective weight-loss plan before the summer months are looming on the horizon. That way you can reach your weight-loss goals by the time warm weather approaches. Rather than relying on unhealthy crash diets in an effort to fit into your swimsuit by summertime, start eating a little less and exercising a little more well before spring draws near.

Step 1

Begin by being more physically active now. If you are like most people, you fall into a habit of being less active during the cold weather. Ease into a more frequent exercise routine by being physically active for short periods of time throughout the day. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, you can receive just as many healthful benefits by exercising three times throughout the day for 10 minutes each. It is not necessary for you to exercise for 30 minutes continuously.

Step 2

Eat a little less each day to help you lose weight slowly and safely. Like many people, you probably eat more and resist cravings less during the winter months. Cutting back on what you eat or drink by just 200 to 300 calories a day will make it possible for you to lose up to a pound every 2 weeks. Skip the mayonnaise or cheese on your sandwiches, drizzle just a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil and honey on your salads, pass on the soft drinks or lattes or leave a little food left on your plate at mealtime.

Step 3

Eat foods in the proper portions to work your way to a slimmer you. The American Diabetes Association suggests dividing your plate into three sections. Fill half of your plate with nonstarchy vegetables. The remaining two smaller sections on your plate should have one portion of fish, poultry or lean meat and one portion of carbohydrates. If you use this guide, you will be eating a well-balanced meal showing sensible portion control.

Step 4

Stop sitting indoors as the cold weather comes to an end. Being exposed to less sunlight and warmth during the winter months can make you more sedentary. Do not allow yourself to get into a rut by spending more time watching television or sitting at your computer. Make the effort to get outside for at least a few minutes each day. By spending less time inside, you can get more exercise and will be less likely to snack on unhealthy foods.

Step 5

Keep drinking water throughout the cold weather, even though you may not feel as thirsty as you do in warmer temperatures. Drinking enough water can help you lose some extra weight before summer arrives. Staying well-hydrated leaves you feeling full longer and makes you less likely to snack when you are actually thirsty. When you drink at least eight glasses of water each day, you are also less likely to add unnecessary calories to your body in the form of beverages.

Tips and Warnings

  • To provide your metabolism with more of a boost, start eating five or six small meals each day rather than three big meals. You can do this easily by cutting in half how much you eat at a meal and eating every 3 or 4 hours as your schedule allows.
