Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic pain and tender points on the body. Depression's symptoms include sadness, loss of interest in activities and impaired functioning. Many people with fibromyalgia have a history of depression. In fact, there appears to be a genetic link between the two disorders, according to the website Psychiatric News. It is no wonder, then, that some of the same supplements may be useful for both conditions. Use supplements under the supervision of a physician or other qualified health care professional.
5-HTP
5-HTP, the common abbreviation for L-5-hydroxytryptophan, is a key component in the synthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in both depression and fibromyalgia pain. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, several studies showed that 5-HTP alleviated fibromylagia-associated pain, anxiety, morning stiffness and fatigue. Other studies demonstrated that 5-HTP was equivalent to certain prescription drugs, including fluvoxamine, in alleviating symptoms of depression. Additionally, patients on 5-HTP had fewer side effects than those taking conventional antidepressants. The studies were preliminary, and much more research is needed before 5-HTP can be widely recommended, however.
SAMe
S-adenosylmethionine, also known as SAMe, may be useful for both fibromyalgia and depression. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that several studies suggest that this supplement may improve fibromyalgia symptoms such as fatigue, pain, morning stiffness and mood disturbances. Additionally, the University of Maryland Medical Center states that some studies have shown SAMe to be as good as prescription antidepressants in relieving the symptoms of mild-to-moderate depression. SAMe is a substance that is naturally present in the fluids and tissues of the human body. It is typically sold in tablet form. Consult a qualified health care professional before using it for depression, fibromyalgia or any other health condition.
Ashwagandha
American herbalist David Winston and researcher Steven Maimes write in their book "Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief" that adaptogens are herbs that normalize the physiology and increase the body's resistance to chemical, biological and physical stressors. They state that the Ayurvedic herb known as ashwagandha is a potent adaptogen useful in depression and rheumatic disorders such as fibromyalgia. Ashwagandha is calming, while most other adaptogens are stimulating. In addition to relaxing the nervous system, ashwagandha sharpens cognition. That makes it especially useful in combating "fibro fog," a fibromyalgia symptom characterized by confusion and forgetfulness. Like any other supplement, ashwagandha has the potential to negatively interact with medications and supplements alike. Consult a qualified health care provider before adding it to your regimen.
