Muscle Milk by CytoSport is one of the most popular and widely available protein supplements on the market. Muscle Milk claims to help increase strength, improve lean muscle growth and enhance recovery.
Protein Blend
Muscle Milk's "EvoPro" protein blend contains a combination of whey protein isolate (a quick source of protein for muscles), caseins (slow-release proteins) and alpha-lactalbumin (whose amino acids are more easily absorbed than both whey and caseins).
Colostrum
Muscle Milk's formula is modeled after mother's milk, containing a hormone called colostrum found in breast milk. Several studies have shown that bovine colostrum (the kind used in Muscle Milk) enhances anaerobic performance and post-exercise recovery.
Other Nutrients
Muscle Milk contains medium-chain triglyceride fats, which promote fat burning. The sugars used in Muscle Milk are complex carbohydrates, which release slowly into the bloodstream and provide sustained energy.
Side Effects
Muscle Milk products are lactose-free, but athletes who suffer from soy and dairy sensitivities and allergies should read the ingredients carefully as they may vary by flavor.
Warnings
G-amine--an ingredient in Muscle Milk--elevates blood levels of homocysteine. Elevated homocysteine has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Diabetics should also be wary of L-glutamate used in Muscle Milk, which may have unpredictable effects on blood sugar.
