Replacement nourishment can be provided by mouth or by a feeding tube. A tube feeding is used in place of solid foods when you have problems with swallowing or digestion or you need extra nutrition. People may use Ensure Plus, which is a liquid nutritional supplement, for increased nourishment. Ensure Plus may produce some side effects.

Vomiting

Vomiting may occur when you first take in liquid nutrition, Drugs.com reports. Your digestive system needs to become familiar with the nutritional components. Sometimes the stomach and intestines are sensitive to new food products. When vomiting occurs, your doctor may need to evaluate if you can tolerate Ensure Plus. Vomiting can become a serious problem if you already are weakened from such conditions as a stroke. You may inhale the liquid into your lungs, which can cause serious problems, including death.

Diarrhea

Ensure Plus may induce diarrhea or loose stools. Your digestive system may need time for adjustment when you introduce a new food product. Your doctor may order that water be added to Ensure Plus to make it easier to digest. If diarrhea does not go away, then your physician may need to change to another type of nutritional supplement. Some products taken by mouth or by way of tube feeding create more irritation than others when introduced to the digestive system.

Nausea

Nausea may occur, primarily when you first use Ensure Plus, and this may make it difficult for you to want to take it. Your doctor may need to prescribe a medication such as prochlorperazine or trimethobenzamide to combat the nausea. This will enable you to tolerate the nutritional substance more comfortably.

Constipation

Constipation may occur when you need more water in your diet aside from the Ensure Plus. When your body has an insufficient supply of water, your intestines do not have a proper amount of fluid to cause your stools to become soft. You then may find it difficult to have a normal bowel movement.
