Heart rate monitors are common tools used by recreational exercisers and elite athletes. Using a heart rate monitor can help you exercise efficiently to achieve goals while keeping you in safe heart rate ranges, according to the American Council on Exercise. Monitors can vary from very basic varieties to those with GPS and other capabilities. Polar and Timex are just two companies that have monitors at different price points.

Keep It Simple

For those new to using a heart rate monitor, both Polar and Timex have models that are about $60 at the time of publication with basic functions. The Polar FT1 shows your heart rate, date, time, day of the week and can even be set for target heart rate ranges. The Timex Health Touch does slightly more, offering calories burned during exercise as well.

Top of the Line

If you want to know how far you went along with calories, pace and Internet tracking, you can spend up to $500, at the time of publication. The Timex Ironman Run Trainer 2.0 with GPS is more affordable and compatible with various training sites such as Training Peaks and Map My Run, two websites that offer workouts and tracking information. The Polar RC3 GPS Enabled is slightly more but has comparable features, and information collected during your workouts can be uploaded to the Polar training site. This allows you to track distance, calories and even your heart rates during different workouts and compare them over time.
