Then intent of seven-day soup diets is rapid weight loss. For a week, you consume a very low number of calories by eating soups made up of mostly vegetables. Although you're likely to lose weight, these diets are not typically recommended; the weight you lose will likely return once you resume your normal eating patterns. Talk to a doctor if you plan to take part in a week-long soup diet.

Cabbage Soup Diet

This fad diet promises weight loss up to 10 pounds in a single week. Each day on the diet, you are allowed to consume as much cabbage soup as you want along with certain fruits and vegetables. On two of the days, you are permitted a serving of beef or chicken. Although recipes vary, common ingredients included in the cabbage soup are cabbage, onion, tomatoes, celery and mushrooms. Since you are lacking essential nutrients, such as protein and iron, you may develop side effects, such as fatigue, difficulty concentrating, nausea and dizziness.

Sacred Heart Diet

The Sacred Heart Diet has similarities to the Cabbage Soup Diet and was purportedly recommended to overweight patients at the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital -- but the hospital disclaims any association with the fad diet. On certain days, you are permitted to eat fruit, vegetables and brown rice until you are full. A minimum of one serving of soup per day is recommended. The soup is home-made and includes chicken noodle soup mix, peppers, green beans, celery, onions and stewed tomatoes. Although you may lose weight, the low calorie count can also cause unwanted side effects.

The Amazing Soup Diet

This week-long plan was created by the editors of the magazine "Good Housekeeping." Although soup is a staple on this diet, you are allowed to eat whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy foods. Some breakfast and lunch options include yogurt with berries, cottage cheese with mixed fruit, turkey pita, salmon and bean salad, oatmeal with raisins and ham on whole grain bread. For each dinner, you have a bowl of soup. Sample permitted soups include minestrone, chicken soup, fish stew and goulash. Instead of snacks, you are encouraged to munch on raw vegetables. Twice a week, you are allowed a single 100-calorie snack.
