The white cheese on a pizza is generally mozzarella cheese or a mixture of mozzarella, Romano or Parmesan. Mozzarella cheese is available in a part-skim milk variety that is lower in fat and calories than the whole-milk mozzarella variety.

Calories

The common serving size for mozzarella cheese is 1 oz. in shredded or sliced style. The amount of cheese on a pizza varies based on the size of the pizza. One 1-oz. serving of part-skim mozzarella has approximately 72 calories, while whole-milk mozzarella has approximately 85 calories. A 1-oz. serving of Romano cheese has 110 calories, while the same amount of grated Parmesan has 112 calories.

Nutrition

A 1-oz. serving of part-skim mozzarella pizza cheese has 7 g of protein and 5 g of fat that contribute to the total caloric value of the product. One serving of whole-milk mozzarella has 6.5 g of protein and 6.5 g of fat that contribute to the total calories. A single serving of Romano has 9 g of protein and 7.6 g fat. One serving of Parmesan cheese has 11 g of protein and 8 g of fat. Each of these cheeses has 1 g of carbohydrates or less.

Vitamins and Minerals

Pizza cheese contains significant amount of calcium and phosphorus. Part-skim mozzarella has 222 mg calcium and 131 mg phosphorus. Whole-milk mozzarella has 143 mg calcium and 100 mg phosphorus. Romano cheese has 302 mg calcium and 215 mg phosphorus. Parmesan cheese has 314 mg calcium and 207 mg phosphorus.
