Nutrisystem is a food delivery system that can help you lose weight by controlling your portions while you eat a balanced diet. Along with the food that Nutrisystem delivers, the plan suggests eating additional snacks that you buy from the grocery store. You can get more detail about kinds of foods and their serving sizes once you sign up for a Nutrisystem plan and get access to the members' support community and personal menu plan.

Fruits And Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are staples on the Nutrisystem list of Fresh Grocery Items for Everyday. You can use them for snacks or to supplement your Nutrisystem meals, and many are high in vitamins such as vitamins A and C, minerals such as potassium and dietary fiber. Some ideas for fruit are apples, cherries, plums and orange juice. Your meal plan should also include vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, vegetable juice and broccoli. You can eat as much as you want from a selection of extremely low-calorie vegetables including zucchini, radishes, watercress and hot peppers. You can use these vegetables to decrease your hunger from going on a low-calorie diet

Dairy And Protein

Nutrisystem recommends eating dairy products or dairy alternatives to help you get your calcium. You can have fat free milk or cottage cheese or a yogurt that has no more than 120 calories and has 12 g carbohydrate, 0 g fat and at least 7 g protein per 8-oz. cup. If you are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk, or you do not like dairy products, you can get your calcium from non-dairy options such as soy milk and soy cheese. Some of the protein snacks that you should purchase at the grocery store are animal products such as chicken, turkey, eggs, tuna and shrimp. If you are vegetarian or want other options, you can choose tofu, edamame beans, tempeh or seitan, a wheat-based meat substitute that provides high quality protein.

Carbohydrates And Fats

The Nutrisystem diet is low-glycemic, which means that its foods do not lead to sharp increases in your blood sugar. Low-glycemic carbohydrates are on the Nutrisystem list of Fresh Grocery Items for Everyday. Choices are high in fiber, and they include kidney beans, oatmeal, and whole-grain bread. You should also eat small amounts of healthy fats such as almonds, peanut butter and avocados. If you are watching your sodium intake, choose your carbohydrates carefully because some can be high in sodium. According to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, healthy adults on a 2,000-calorie diet should have no more than 2,300 mg sodium per day, and if you have high blood pressure, you should stay under 1,500 mg. The Nutrisystem diet provides 1,800 to 2,000 mg sodium per day unless you request low-sodium options.
