Summer brings about weight gain for many people. This is because summer is usually associated with fun, letting go and enjoying life, even if it means more drinking, richer foods and less exercise. By the time summer is over, you may have a significant amount of weight to lose. The good news is that during the fall, weight loss should be easier than ever.

Step 1

Take up hiking. Autumn is the best time of the year to explore the outdoors. Crispy air and cool afternoons mean you can easily spend hours trekking without having to worry about heat stroke. Biking is another popular autumn sport and one that can be particularly enjoyed if you have parks or fall colors around.

Step 2

Give up alcohol for a while. Cold beers are a staple of summer, and they're high in calories and carbs. Either switch to non-alcoholic drinks or try spacing out your drinks more. Warm tea, hot cider and coffee (hold the cream and sugar) are all better options for the cooling weather.

Step 3

Stay away from fattening autumn foods. With the holiday season on the way, foods like creamy soups, stews and butter-rich mashed potatoes can add up to a lot of calories over the course of a week. Focus on broth-based soups instead and go for grilled proteins instead of richer foods such as fried meats.

Step 4

Take advantage of healthy seasonal foods. Roasted pumpkin seeds can be a great mid-afternoon snack, and squash can be baked or mashed up as a replacement for white potatoes. Apple picking can be not only a great way to spend some time outdoors and burn calories, but you can use the apples for desserts and in recipes.

Step 5

Shop at the farmer's market. Once summer is over, produce starts showing up at roadside and outdoor markets. If you focus your meals on foods found at the market and then add lean proteins and whole grains as a complement, you'll find yourself savings tons of calories.
