Many older adults have a few floaters, those small black spots that pass through your vision, frequently vanishing as fast as they appear. Large floaters may also appear, either alone or with smaller spots, and these large floaters may occasionally disrupt vision until they move out of your line of sight. Certain vitamins may help to prevent new floaters. A multivitamin, such as Centrum vitamins, may offer valuable protection for your eyes.
Cause
The vitreous is a thick, gel-like substance that fills the back portion of the eye, helping the eye to maintain its shape. As the vitreous ages, the substance may shrink and pull away from the eye, and if the shrinking vitreous clumps together, this will result in floaters. If the vitreous pulls away from the retina, this may tear the retina, the tissue that lines the back of the eye. This could cause the blood vessels in the retina to bleed, which could cause black spots in your vision, or the piece of retina may float across your vision. You cannot prevent the aging of the vitreous. You may elect to take supplements and eat a healthful diet, since this may help nourish and strengthen your retinas, and this could prevent a retinal tear.
Centrum Vitamins
Pfizer, a pharmaceutical company, manufactures Centrum vitamins in a number of formulas, such as a vitamin for women and men with a variety of nutrient needs. Your health care provider or eye doctor can help you determine which multivitamin will work best with your health and eye care needs. The Centrum Silver class of vitamins may provide the necessary vitamins to support the health of your eyes.
Nutrients
Some nutrients may promote strong retinal tissue and help to prevent certain eye diseases. These nutrients include vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein and zeaxanthin. Your eye doctor will help you determine the appropriate dose of each nutrient. Centrum vitamins may not offer a formulation that provides the dose you require. In such cases, your eye doctor or health care professional may recommend taking a different brand of vitamin that offers the formulation best for you.
Treatment
Nutrients found in Centrum and other multivitamins cannot treat eye floaters. In fact, eye doctors do not typically remove floaters since the procedure, called a vitrectomy, could lead to a retinal detachment or other serious vision-threatening consequences. If you have floaters that interfere with clear vision on a daily basis, your eye surgeon may consider removing the vitreous and replacing it with a saline solution.
Warnings
Your health care provider may determine that Centrum vitamins may not be appropriate for your nutritional or health care needs. Some medications react to vitamins or minerals, so you should inform your doctor about all the medications and supplements you currently use. She can help you determine the appropriate supplement to take in order to ensure that you have an adequate intake of necessary vitamins and minerals while preventing the likelihood of a reaction.
