Perfect Diet for Weight Loss

When you decide that you want to lose weight, the first thing you have to decide is what diet you want to follow. The diet you choose should be based on learning healthy eating habits that can be followed after you lose the weight so that you can keep it off.

Identification

The perfect diet for weight loss includes all of the major food groups: vegetables, lean protein, dairy products, fruits and grains. In addition, it should include a limited amount of healthy fats, such as olive oil. By including all of these food groups in your daily diet, you are much more likely to eat a balanced diet that you need to stay healthy and keep your body functioning properly.

Components

When you are looking at a diet, you need to ensure that the diet includes a sufficient number of calories. For a woman, 1,200 calories per day is the absolute minimum you need to stay healthy; however, the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics notes that most women need between 1,600 and 2,200 calories per day depending on activity level. Men need at least 1,800 calories per day; however, most men need 2,200 to 2,800 calories per day.

Considerations

On top of the eating portion of your diet, it should also include an exercise plan. When you are trying to lose weight, exercise can help you to build lean muscle mass and lose fat. Ideally, your workout plan will consist of cardiovascular exercise and strength training exercise. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that a person losing weight should exercise for a total of 60 to 90 minutes on most days.

Time Frame

Slow and steady weight loss is ideal, especially if you plan to keep the weight off once you lose it. The perfect diet program should allow you to lose weight at a rate of one to two pounds per week. If you lose weight any faster than that, the American Academy of Family Physicians warns that you are likely to be losing water weight and lean muscle mass instead of losing fat.

Warning

If you have any medical conditions, you should talk to your doctor about what diet program you will follow. Not every diet is appropriate for every medical condition. For example, fibrous vegetables shouldn't be eaten by a person who has had weight loss surgery or a person who suffers from ulcerative colitis. Additionally, some medical conditions may require modified exercise programs.
