Watermelon seeds are the black pips about the size of a fingernail found in most watermelons. They contain fat, protein and carbohydrates, making them relatively high in calories. The seeds are usually dried before being eaten as a snack or topping.
Consumption
In the U.S., watermelon seeds are not commonly eaten. However, when dried and salted, they are a popular snack in many Asian countries, according to Texas A&M University Department of Horticultural Sciences.
Calories
A quarter-cup, or one ounce, of plain dried watermelon seeds contains 158 calories, according to the Calorie King website. That works out to 2,527 calories per pound. The seeds contain 47 percent fat, including 10 percent saturated fat. The seeds contain small amounts of calcium, potassium and sodium.
Considerations
Watermelon seeds may be dry roasted or coated with salt or other seasonings. Some of these coatings, such as honey or sugar, will increase the number of calories. Although watermelon seeds contain fat, they have no cholesterol.
