More than 60 percent of men in the United States are overweight or obese, according to a 2010 study published in the "Journal of the American Medical
Association." Men are already 1 1/2 times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than women and carrying extra weight will only increase this rate. To get lean and stay lean, men need to find a weight loss diet that includes foods they enjoy and can follow for life.
Low-Carbohydrate Diet
A low-carbohydrate diet may be a good diet plan to help men get lean. A low-carbohydrate helps men lose fat around their abdomen, according to a 2004 study published in "Nutrition and Metabolism." The study compared the effects of a low-carbohydrate diet and a low-fat diet in both men and women on weight loss and body composition. The men on the low-carbohydrate diet showed significantly greater reductions in body weight, total fat mass, and trunk fat mass than either the men on the low-fat diet or the women on the low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet. A low-carbohydrate diet limits your total carbohydrate intake to 50 to 150 g a day. A typical meal consists of a lean source of protein and a non-starchy vegetable. The low-carbohydrate omits a number of foods, including most starches and fruits, and is best suited for men who enjoy eating meat over any other type of food.
The Mayo Clinic Diet
Men need to eat more fruits and vegetables, according to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Men have higher rates of diet related diseases than women and eating more fruits and vegetables can help reduce their risk, in addition to helping to promote a healthy weight. The Mayo Clinic diet is based on the Mayo Clinic food guide pyramid which emphasizes a high intake of fruits and vegetables. It also suggests you choose more whole grains, lean sources of protein and low-fat dairy foods. In addition to providing you with diet guidelines, the Mayo Clinic diet also works on helping you create healthy habits you can continue for life to help you maintain your new lean body.
