The thigh, buttocks and abdomen in nearly all women show susceptibility to cellulite accumulation, explains DermNet NZ. Characterized by a dimpling and lumpy appearance to the skin, cellulite may cause embarrassment, but not physical harm. Genetic predisposition, lifestyle and obesity increase the incidence of cellulite.

Exercise

Exercise is a proven method to reduce cellulite. Try a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise, along with eating a healthy diet. A cellulite-reduction program featured in a book by Wayne Westcott, Ph.D. called "No More Cellulite," outlines a fitness program created especially to address cellulite reduction. A fitness research director at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, Massachusetts, Wescott prescribes 20 minutes each of strength training and cardiovascular exercise at 70 to 80 percent of your maximal prescribed heart rate three days a week. An eight-week study, performed by Wescott and published on the ACE Fitness website, found this exercise and diet program reduces fat, increases muscle mass and produces weight loss of about 10 pounds after two months.

Radio Frequencies and Infrared Light

Let modern technology help you reduce cellulite effectively. Treatments including VelaShape and Elos apply a combination of the energy of radio frequencies and infrared light to the area on your body with cellulite. According to the December 2004 issue of the "Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy," 100 percent of patients receiving these treatments twice weekly for four or eight weeks saw improvement in smoothing and reduction of cellulite appearance. A dermatologist analyzed before and after photographs and determined 23 percent experienced excellent or very good improvement and 35 percent showed good improvement. Additionally, more than 90 percent of the patients who underwent this method to reduce cellulite would recommend it to friends.

Carbon Dioxide Therapy

Consider carbon dioxide therapy as a proven method to reduce cellulite. For this cellulite treatment, qualified medical personnel infuse carbon dioxide to the affected area subcutaneously --- under the skin. A study by Georgia S. K. Lee from the TLC Medical Practice Pte Ltd. in Holland Village, Singapore and published in the April 2010 issue of the journal of "Aesthetic Plastic Surgery" found that after four years of treatment, the 101 women who underwent carbon dioxide therapy saw a reduction in cellulite resulting in smaller measurements of waist and thigh circumference. The efficacy of carbon dioxide therapy for weight loss and cellulite reduction was greater for those in the 40 to 50 year old age group in comparison with participants who were 30 to 39 years of age.
