How to Calculate BMI in a 3 Year Old

The body mass index (BMI) is a measurement of the fat composition compared to weight, height, gender and age. A BMI calculation indicates a risk for disease like diabetes and heart disease. A three year old whose BMI exceeds healthy limits is susceptible to developing diseases during adolescent years. A child's BMI calculation steps are the same as an adult, and the risk of developing diseases and long-term effects is just as great. Some university websites provide free resources for calculating BMI.

Step 1

Calculate the height of the child. Use the tape measure to record the height of the child in inches or centimeters. Take note of how tall the child is to enter it into the online calculator.

Step 2

Use a scale to record the weight of the child. The scale should be calibrated to ensure that the weight is measured as accurately as possible. Record the weight for the online calculator.

Step 3

Use the resource link to enter the child's information. The Children's Mercy hospital requires the child's height, weight, age and gender. Once the information is entered, click the "Calculate" button. The result is shown on the right side.

Step 4

Assess your child's health risk using standard BMI factors. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is normal. Below 18.5 is underweight, and a BMI over 35.0 is overweight.
