Collagen is a tough protein that comprises approximately 30 percent of your body protein, according to the National Institutes of Health. This protein helps form the structure of your tendons, bones and connective tissues. Collagen gives your skin firmness, elasticity and tone. As you age, collagen production in your body declines, and your skin may lose its firmness and tone. A diet rich in collagen-containing foods may help contribute to or maintain healthy skin.

Protein-Rich Foods Containing Lysine

Lysine is an important amino acid in your body that is essential for the formation of collagen. Including lysine-rich foods in your diet may contribute to increased production of collagen. Protein-rich foods are particularly good sources of lysine, including meat such as red meat, poultry and pork. Other good protein-rich sources include Parmesan cheese, cod, sardines, nuts and eggs.

Foods Rich In Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an important vitamin in the production of collagen, according to the Linus Pauling Institutes. Including vitamin C-rich foods in your diet may help contribute to maintaining firm and healthy skin. Good sources of vitamin C include fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, strawberries and tomatoes. Other sources include vegetables such as sweet potatoes, broccoli and red peppers.

Soy Products and Vegetarian Proteins

Many vegetarian forms of protein are also important in the formation of collagen. These products may contain lysine, which contributes to collagen formation. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, soy products such as tofu and soybeans can contribute to collagen formation in your skin, tendons and ligaments. Other good vegetarian protein sources that aid in collagen formation include legumes, beans, nuts and seeds.
