Influencing Factors
A person's weight, height, age, sex, medical condition and level of physical activity all influence daily caloric needs, according to the National Institutes of Health. Requirements may be higher or lower than average estimates if you are athletic, pregnant, nursing or dealing with a chronic illness.
Inactive
According to the Mayo Clinic, an inactive woman who is 5 feet tall and weighs 100 pounds should consume 1,550 calories per day. Inactive men of the same size require 1,600 calories daily.
Moderately Active
If you exercise several times a week, your calorie needs will be higher than your less-active peers of the same weight and stature. The Mayo Clinic estimates that a moderately active adult who weighs 100 pounds needs 1,700 to 1,900 calories a day.
Physically Active
People who are very active have higher calorie needs. The Mayo Clinic says a woman who exercises vigorously every day needs 2,150 calories to maintain a weight of 100 pounds. A similarly active man needs 2,200 calories a day.
