Exercise Equipment for Pilates

Pilates is a type of exercise that enhances postural alignment, core stability, coordination strength and fluidity of movement. The exercises can either be performed on the mat or on Pilates equipment. While there are a number of machines that are specifically designed for Pilates exercises, some instructors use other forms of fitness equipment.

The Reformer

The Reformer was the first and most common type of Pilates exercise equipment. It has a moving carriage, a set of straps, a foot bar and a jump board. Resistance is adjusted by adding or removing springs, which are color-coded according to their level of resistance. Any part of the body can be exercised on the Reformer.

The Cadillac

The Cadillac is also known as the trapeze table. This complex contraption consists of a table, which is surrounded by four poles. Accessories, such as springs, straps and bars are attached to these poles. The Cadillac, like the Reformer can work every part of the body.

The Wunda Chair

The Pilates Wunda Chair is composed of a box, which resembles a chair. It will either have a platform, or a set of pedals, which cover a series of resistance springs. The chair is used for a variety of upper body, foot, ankle and side-bending types of exercises.

Arc Barrels

The Pilates Arc Barrel is often used for spinal extension exercises. It is composed of wood and dense foam, which is covered with vinyl upholstery. Some barrels also come with a ladder, which provides additional exercises.

The Tower

The Pilates Tower can be described as a portable version of the Cadillac. It can either be attached to a Reformer, or placed against a wall for standing Pilates exercises. The Tower is often used as a space saver in smaller Pilates studios.

Total Gym and Cable Equipment

Total Gym and cable exercise equipment was not designed for Pilates, but their similarity to the Reformer makes them a viable substitute for traditional Pilates equipment. The Total Gym can be placed on an incline, which can either add challenge or provide assistance in the Pilates exercises.

The Stability Ball

The balance challenges posed by stability ball offer an effective means of training the deep core musculature. The core muscles, or what Pilates called the "powerhouse" are the basis of the Pilates technique. The ball can be used in conjunction with elastic resistance bands and cable equipment to simulate the actions of the Pilates reformer.

The Fitness Circle

The Pilates Fitness Circle is composed of a flexible metal material. The pads on the inside and outside of the ring enable the student to perform a variety of upper and lower body exercises.

The Bosu

The Bosu bears a close resemblance to the Arc Barrel, so it is often used for traditional arc barrel exercises. It can also be used for side-bending Pilates exercise, such as the mermaid. Some instructors also use it for the side-leg series, for clients who experience discomfort when lying on their side while on the floor.
