Serotonin is a small molecule which acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain and plays an essential role in mood and appetite regulation. Many prescription drugs combat depression by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain which stimulates one's mood and calms the nerves. The body can naturally produce this compound by breaking down larger amino acids such as tryptophan.
