The Apple Patch Diet is actually an herbal supplement that's purported to help you lose weight. It's supposed to work by helping your body burn calories and use stored body fat as an energy source. The manufacturer promises it's effective for both men and women. Always consult a health-care professional before trying a new diet supplement.

Instructions

You are supposed to take two Apple Patch Diet capsules at a time with water. The supplement manufacturer does not offer a specific meal or eating plan to go along with its Apple Patch Diet supplements, notes the Diet Spotlight website. Likewise, no fitness regimen is suggested.

Identification

Apple Patch Diet contains several active ingredients, including hoodia gordonii, yerba mate, guarana and green tea leaf extract. Hoodia is proven to curb your appetite, according to Drugs.com. Green tea extract along with caffeine may help you lose weight by raising your metabolism and thus your ability to burn fat, according to University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC. Guarana and yerba mate are both sources of caffeine. Consult your physician before using any of these herbs.

Effects

Although the Apple Patch Diet pill manufacturer claims this supplement won't cause side effects, UMMC cautions that green tea and other caffeine-containing substances can cause dizziness, irritability, heart palpitations or insomnia. An overdose of caffeine can lead to headaches and diarrhea. If you have abdominal spasms or vomit, you need to seek medical attention because you could have caffeine poisoning. According to Drugs.com, hoodia doesn't have documented side effects, but not all potential risks are known. The experts at Drugs.com advise you not to take products with hoodia if you have diabetes, a bleeding disorder, high blood pressure or heart disease. You should not use hoodia without your doctor's approval.

Warning

This supplement can cause drug interactions due to its green tea content, according to UMMC. Green tea inhibits the action of some heart medications, the anxiety medications known as benzodiazepines and the antipsychotic medicine clozapine. It also increases your risk for bleeding when taken with blood thinners.

Green tea can increase your blood pressure if you take blood pressure or heart disease medicines. It can cause severe increases in blood pressure when taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Caffeine in general also can lead to severe blood pressure increases as well as mania when taken in combination with phenylpropanolamine, which is commonly used in over-the-counter weight-loss pills and prescription cough and cold medications, note the experts at UMMC.

Expert Insight

Drugs.com cautions that supplements with hoodia have not been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for safety, purity or effectiveness. Also, no regulated manufacturing standards exist for such compounds. In some instances, herbal supplements contaminated with other drugs or toxic metals have been sold. Before using any herbal supplements, consult your doctor.
