Valerian Complex is an over-the-counter supplement that contains three natural herbs: valerian root, passionflower and spiny jujube seed. This supplement is promoted to help encourage relaxation and sleep in people with sleeping disorders, such as insomnia. Discuss the side effects of Valerian Complex with your medical provider before beginning treatment with this natural supplement.

Hair, Nail or Skin Discoloration

Hair, nail or skin discoloration may occur as a side effect of taking Valerian Complex, RxList reports. You may also notice that your skin appears unusually dry or scaly. These side effects are typically mild and subside once treatment with this herbal supplement ends.

Poor Muscle Control

Valerian Complex contains passionflower, which may affect the way in which your muscles normally function. Consequently, you may experience poor voluntary muscle control or coordination as a side effect of treatment, MedlinePlus explains. Poor muscle control may make it difficult for you to move about normally. Seek care from your physician if you experience severe muscle control problems to ensure you receive prompt and appropriate care.

Upset Stomach

Treatment with this type of supplement may cause upset stomach side effects. You may feel nauseated, begin vomiting or lose your normal appetite. The presence of valerian in this supplement may also induce diarrhea, or frequent, loose bowel movements, Drugs.com explains. Diarrhea may contribute to additional upset stomach side effects, such as stomach fullness, cramping or discomfort. If these side effects do not subside, consult your medical provider.
