Proponents of using vitamin B-12 shots to aid in weight loss explain that these treatments may help boost both your metabolism and energy levels; however, health professionals with the Mayo Clinic report that there is no clear evidence that vitamin B-12 injections improve weight loss efforts. Discuss the side effects of B-12 shots with your doctor before choosing this as a method of weight loss assistance. Regardless of how you choose to lose weight, be sure to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine.

Skin Reaction at Injection Site

After you receive a vitamin B-12 shot, you may develop a skin reaction at the injection site. Your skin may appear unusually red, irritated or swollen, Drugs.com warns. You may also notice that the skin surrounding the injection site is tender or painful to the touch. Vitamin B-12 injection site reaction side effects are temporary and typically subside within a day of treatment. Consult your doctor if you experience severe or persistent swelling after you receive a vitamin B-12 treatment.

Itching, Numbness or Tingling

You may experience unusual sensations of itching, numbness or tingling across your body as a side effect following a B-12 injection. These uncomfortable sensations may cause you to scratch at the affected skin, which may increase your risk of developing a skin infection. If these side effects do not subside within a few days following receipt of the shot, talk with your medical care provider.

Stomach Discomfort

Stomach discomfort may occur as a side effect of a vitamin B-12 shot. You may experience diarrhea, which may cause stomach cramping or bloating, and nausea. These side effects may also contribute to a temporary loss of your normal appetite.

Flu-like Symptoms

A vitamin B-12 shot may induce flu-like symptoms, such as fever or headache, Drugs.com warns. Additional flu-like symptoms may include weakness, joint pain or dizziness. Seek care from your physician if you develop a fever, as this side effect of a vitamin B-12 shot may also be a sign of another medical issue, such as an infection or the flu.
