Mesterolone is a type of androgen, or male hormone, prescribed for androgen deficiency, or low levels of natural male hormones, and for infertility in men, according to Patient UK. Commonly known by the brand name Proviron, the hormone is used by both male and female bodybuilders for its anti-estrogenic properties, including fat-burning effects. Mesterolone, like other steroids, also can lead to numerous negative reactions.

Potential

Mesterolone is not beneficial for muscle building on its own, but provides advantages when taken in combination with other hormones, according to the Steroidology website. Using a combination of bodybuilding supplements is commonly called stacking. Because mesterolone prevents the body from converting testosterone supplements to estrogen, it allows the testosterone to have more potent effects. It also decreases estrogenic side effects of other steroids, including fluid retention, reduced sex drive and gynecomastia, or abnormal breast enlargement in men.

How It Works

Androgen receptors are located in muscle cells and fat cells. Androgens bind with these receptors and promote muscle growth and lipolysis, or fat burning, notes the website, Steroid. Some steroids, such as testosterone, increase the number of androgen receptors. Taking a stack of mesterolone and testosterone creates more androgen receptors for mesterolone to bind to because of the testosterone component. This results in more fat loss. It also allows more free testosterone for building muscle because of the mesterolone component that prevents the conversion of testosterone to estrogen.

Considerations for Women

Women can experience significant benefits in muscle building and fat burning from small amounts of mesterolone, reports the Steroidology website. Because mesterolone is a strong androgen, however, women should be extremely cautious about using it. It can rapidly cause virilization, or masculinization. Effects may include a deeper voice, changes in skin texture, clitoral enlargement and irregular menstruation. The Patient UK website cautions that mesterolone is for men only.

Side Effects

Common side effects associated with mesterolone include headache, nausea, and muscle and joint pain, reports Patient UK. Mood changes such as anxiety, depression and irritability are possible. Other side effects may include scalp hair loss, increased facial and body hair growth, oily skin and acne.

Legal Considerations

Mesterolone is a legal substance in many countries, including Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Chile and numerous countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. It is not approved for use in the United States and Canada.
