Herpes simplex refers to a group of viruses that can attack the body and produce chronic sores. Herpes simplex type 1 causes cold sores, and type 2 causes genital herpes, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Although a herpes infection requires ongoing medical attention, avoiding certain foods may reduce the frequency of herpes outbreaks. Check with your physician before changing your diet to address a herpes infection.
Arganine-Rich Foods
Arganine is an amino acid that is necessary for the spread of herpes virus cells, according to Wendy Hodson, contributor to The Diet Channel website. It also destroys lysine, another amino acid that inhibits herpes simplex growth. Peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, almonds, chocolate and pumpkin seeds all contain arganine. Avoid these foods to help control herpes simplex outbreaks.
Refined Flours and Sugars
Avoid products that contain refined sugars and flours, advise the Balches. White bread, pasta, bagels, doughnuts, pies and cakes all contain refined flours. Candy bars, ice cream and frozen yogurt typically contain large amounts of refined sugars. These foods can quickly raise blood glucose levels, which may facilitate herpes simplex virus growth.
Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits, such as grapefruit, oranges, limes and lemons, may increase your risk of herpes outbreaks, according to the Balches. Although many people think of these foods as acidic, they alkalize your blood, allowing herpes simplex virus cells to replicate. This may increase the frequency and severity of herpes outbreaks.
