Grand Teton National Park, in far northwest of Wyoming, is a mecca for vacationers, attracting nearly 4 million visitors a year. Tourists and sportsmen flock to the Tetons to see pristine lakes and clear trout streams surrounded by sage-covered valleys set against a backdrop of majestic mountains that tower 7,000 feet.
Grand Teton National Park
Grand Teton National Park's 484 square miles include more than 200 miles of hiking trails as well as steep cliffs that challenge rock climbers. Jackson Lake, a 25,540-acre reservoir on the Snake River, is stocked with brown trout, cutthroat trout and whitefish. A popular way to fish for them is casting from a raft, a canoe or a boat while floating down the river.
Casting for Trout.
The Snake River cutthroat is a species of trout found nowhere else in the world, Cutthroat, which can be as large as 30 inches, are frequently confused with Pacific salmon. Cutthroat have small black spots that extend below the lateral line on their head, body and fins. They also have yellow to red streaks on the underside of the jaw. The distinct red color on the sides of spawning salmon is absent in the cutthroat.
Float Trips
Although it is possible to fish from your own raft or canoe, a float trip with a professional guide who knows the river, is recommended. Two companies hold concessions on the river: Triangle X Ranch and Snake River Angler. Book either a full day or a half day.
What to Bring
You can bring your own fishing equipment on an organized float trip, but the guide will supply anything you need. Dress in several layers during the winter. In summer wear a hat and be prepared for temperatures in the 90s. The terminal shop stocks everything from dry flies to sunscreen to fishing licenses.
Accommodations
Accommodations in the park vary from high-end lodges to rustic cabins. Jenny Lake Lodge, a small cabin resort, is known for its seclusion, individual attention and award-winning food. Jackson Lake Lodge has outstanding views of Jackson Lake, with the Tetons and Mount Moran in the distance. Spacious lodge rooms and cottages with balconies are available. The lodge also has two restaurants and a heated outdoor pool.
