Signs & Symptoms of Flu in Kids

The influenza virus can attack the body suddenly, leading to a myriad of uncomfortable symptoms. When kids get sick there are certain signs to look out for at the onset of the illness.

Body Aches

An overall achy feeling may be one of the first signs of the flu in kids. This can include body aches throughout the torso, arms and legs. It can also include a severe or throbbing headache.

Weakness

Overall body weakness that targets all major muscle groups is common in kids who have the flu. Muscle pain in the back, legs and chest can make children feel uncomfortable. This weakness can lead to them wanting to sleep for the duration of the illness.

Body Temperature Changes

A fluctuation in a child's body temperature can be unsettling for him. This can be a sudden spike in temperature or fever of up to 102 degrees Fahrenheit that can then plummet to under 98 degrees, causing chills and a shaky feeling.

Upper Respiratory Symptoms

The flu can give kids an assortment of upper respiratory distress, ranging from a stuffy or runny nose, cough, chest congestion, sore throat, hoarse voice, watery eyes to shortness of breath.

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

In some cases of the flu, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can appear with the other symptoms.
