Frizz can be the bane of those with curly or wavy hair. Curls create kinks in the hair shaft, which disrupt the cuticle and leave hair porous and more likely to dry out and appear ragged and frizzy. Maintaining moisture in kinky hair is an important step in preventing it from reacting to changes in the weather, as is learning how to keep the cuticle of the hair shaft as smooth as possible.

Step 1

Maintain your hair with regular trims that will remove split ends. Split ends that are left to fray will travel up the hair shaft and intensify the frizz.

Step 2

Use the correct shampoo and conditioner for your hair type and use them sparingly. You may want to consider shampooing every other day to prevent your hair from drying out or using only lemon juice, as suggested by Lorraine Massey, a noted curly hair stylist. Apply a hair mask every few weeks to keep your hair moisturized.

Step 3

Dry your hair carefully with a towel, squeezing rather than rubbing. Avoid hair dryers if possible, but if not, aim the dryer so it blows down the hair shaft from root to end to keep the cuticle from becoming jagged.

Step 4

Use a dollop of hair serum, pomade or gel to smooth out your hair. Apply a small amount to your fingers and smooth over your hair from root to tips. This will give your hair a glossy sheen while controlling flyaways.

Tips and Warnings

  • Braid your hair before swimming and sleeping to prevent tangles which may lead to breakage and frizzing.
