Crohn's disease is a condition that affects the digestive system. An inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), it causes damage to the tissue that lines the digestive tract. There is no cure for Crohn's disease, but the symptoms can usually be managed.
Symptoms
The symptoms of Crohn's disease can come and go, or be constant. They include diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood in the stools and weight loss.
Causes
Doctors are not sure what causes Crohn's disease in all cases. In some people, it can be a dysfunction of the immune system, and in others, it is caused by a genetic mutation.
Risk Factors
Risk factors for this disease include having a family history of IBD, smoking and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
Complications
Crohn's disease can cause the intestines to become blocked due to swelling and scar tissue. Malnutrition, arthritis, kidney stones and liver problems are other possible complications of this condition.
Treatment
Treatment options include medications such as steroids, immune system suppressors and antibiotics. Nutritional supplements may be necessary, and many patients will require surgery on the intestines.
