Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, are medications that reduce inflammation, pain and swelling. Several anti-inflammatory medications are available over the counter, without a doctor's prescription.

Types

The most commonly available anti-inflammatory drugs are aspirin, sold under brands such as Bayer and Bufferin; ibuprofen, sold under brands such as Motrin and Advil; and naproxen, known as Aleve.

Function

NSAIDs work by stopping the production of enzymes called COX. COX 1 is responsible for keeping the stomach safe from its own acid, and COX 2 can cause inflammation.

Benefits

Anti-inflammatory medications are beneficial in treating the symptoms associated with different types of arthritis. They can also reduce fever and relieve the pain of menstrual cramps, headaches and toothaches.

Side Effects

NSAIDs can cause stomach pain, vomiting, heartburn and a loss of appetite. Other side effects may include nervousness, ringing in the ears, a rash and excess gas in the stomach.

Warning

Anti-inflammatory medications can cause a heart attack or stroke, especially if they are taken for a long period of time. People with high blood pressure, diabetes or heart problems should not take NSAIDs without the advice of their doctor.
