Foods That Contain Alkaline

The balance of acids and alkaline chemicals in the body, also known as the pH, is important for the way that proteins and cells work. According to the acid alkaline balance diet theory, most people eat too much acid-producing food, which puts their body in a state of chronic acidosis. To counteract this, promoters of the acid-alkaline balance diet recommend eating more alkaline foods.

Vegetables

The vast majority of vegetables are alkaline. Part of this is because many vegetables are bitter, and bitter substances are typically alkaline. Parsley, spinach, Brussells sprouts, barley grass, broccoli, mustard greens and garlic are all very alkaline vegetables. Other alkaline vegetables include peppers, cucumbers, celery, lettuce, kale, onions, bok choi, radishes, artichokes, eggplant, beets, cabbage, mushrooms and peas, the Wolfe Clinic explains. In addition to being alkaline, vegetables are high in fiber and are also rich in vitamins and minerals.

Fruits

Many fruits also generate alkaline chemicals in the body. The most alkaline fruits, according to Trans4Mind.com, are raisins, dried figs, dates, papaya, kiwi, pears, apples, currants and grapes. Even fruits that are acidic, including tomatoes, citrus fruits, pineapple, cherries and mangos, are considered to be alkaline foods because when they are digested and absorbed by the body they cause alkaline chemicals to be released into the bloodstream, which counteracts the mildly acidic nature of the fruits themselves.

Nuts And Grains

Many nuts and grains can also make the blood more alkaline. Sesame, flax, pumpkin seeds, products made with soybeans, lentils and almonds are all alkaline foods, AlkalineDiet.org explains. Millet and sprouted seeds are also alkaline, as is fermented tempeh.

Spices

Many spices can neutralize acid in the body. These include, curry, cinnamon, black pepper, ginger, sea salt, chili pepper, tamari and spices, which are made out of herbs.
