Jazzercise, a dance fitness class, is taught in studios all over the country, mainly to girls and women, although boys and men are welcome. Jazzercise is popular with young people to seniors who enjoy music and dance for exercise. It is intended to be fun while improving aerobic capacity, strength and endurance.
Jazzercise
In 1969 Judi Sheppard Missett engineered a combination of jazz and exercise and called it Jazzercise. Today she is the company's CEO. The Jazzercise website describes Jazzercise as a combination of dance-based cardio with strength training and stretching. These components sculpt, tone and lengthen muscles to burn maximum fat.
Calories Burned
According to Matthews Calorie Counter, if you weigh 125 lbs. and do Jazzercise for an hour, the time most classes take, you would burn 358 calories. If you weigh 150 lbs., you would burn 430 calories and if you weigh 175 lbs., you would burn 501. A 200-lb. person would burn 573 calories per hour.
Other Benefits
Jazzercise topped a January 2005 Consumer Reports list of 15 activities, including walking, running, golf and step aerobics. It was the only exercise to fulfill cardiovascular, resistance, weight-bearing, upper body and lower body exercise benefits. Jazzercise combines elements of jazz dance, resistance training, yoga, Pilates and kick-boxing in dance moves choreographed to energetic music.
