An ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the stomach, esophagus or the beginning of the intestine, which is usually caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Ulcers that are bleeding require medical treatment to prevent serious complications. While ulcers aren't caused by spicy foods, changing the diet can help some people reduce symptoms.

Spicy Foods

Some people find that spicy foods worsen their ulcer symptoms. But this doesn't apply to everyone with an ulcer and what causes pain is unique to you, FamilyDoctor.org states. So stay away from any spicy foods that normally give you heartburn. You may want to avoid foods that contain black pepper, chili, mustard seed or nutmeg.

Alcohol

Alcohol can irritate and even erode the lining of your stomach and intestines, particularly if you drink a lot, MayoClinic.com warns. This can cause inflammation and bleeding, which can worsen symptoms. So cut back on alcohol use or completely eliminate it.

Coffee and Other Beverages

Coffee, even if decaffeinated, can increase the production of acid in your stomach and worsen ulcer symptoms. Cut down on your coffee intake or eliminate it if you can. Tea and carbonated sodas can have the same effect and you should consider reducing them if they cause you problems.

Other Foods

Certain foods may aggravate stomach pain and other ulcer symptoms but these can vary. What bothers some patients may not pose a problem for you, FamilyDoctor.org mentions. You may want to avoid chocolate, meat extracts and fatty foods to see if that helps ease your symptoms. If you smoke or take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like aspirin or ibuprofen, try quitting because these factors can also worsen symptoms.
